Tape Options for cassette duplication !

Recording The Masters RTM911 (aka Fox) Ferro Music Grade Tape:

The Fox RTM911 is one of the best performing tapes currently being manufactured. Very consistent, clean, great sound, just about perfect quality. It out-performs our Analogue Media Super Ferro in some ways.
Normal-Bias Analogue Media Super Ferro Music Grade Tape:

Analogue Media Super Ferro is a very good tape with low noise floor, high output level, and a warm sound. We have our Super Ferro in C-60 and C-90 formats (good up to 96 minutes). Tapes longer than 96 minutes are made with New Old Stock classic BASF/Emtec/ECP tape (which is the predecessor of the RTM tape).
BASF Chrome Plus Extra:

A limited amount of BASF Chrome Plus Extra is available for real-time duplication. BASF Chrome Plus Extra was one of the the best Chrome tapes ever made. This Plus Extra version has some added cobalt particles for a warmer sound. Only available for real-time duplication.
110 and 120 minute normal-bias tape:

A very limited amount of BASF/Emtec/ECP Ferro 110 and 120 minute tape is available. 120 minute tape is very thin and easily damaged. Currently, we can only do realtime duplication with these long-play tapes.

Duplication speed options

Real-time:

Real-time duplication is suitable for high-fidelity music reproduction with the lowest tape noise and best fidelity from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Tapes are loaded to the exact length needed and then recorded in real-time, both sides at the same time. Duplication is done directly from your audio files. Every tape is checked on the A-side to ensure the quality is good. We can copy from 24-bit masters giving a resolution better than CD. We can also copy directly from a cassette master.
Pro High Speed:

Your master is reviewed and loaded into a digital bin. Duplication is done at high speed directly onto large tape pancakes. The pancakes are then loaded into the cassettes and cut to the exact length thanks to a low frequency cue tone recorded between copies. This method gives a good consistent result with flat frequency response from 20 Hz to 16 kHz. About 1 tape out of 50 is checked to ensure the quality is correct.

Cassette J-Card Printing Options

Offset printing: Offset printing is available by custom quote for runs of 500 or more.
A J-Card is the standard cover that goes into a cassette box. It's shaped like a J. Some people call it a "3-panel" because it has a front panel, a spine, and a back cover flap. J-Cards can have additional panels which we refer to as J+1, J+2, J+3, J+4, etc... We have templates available up to J+10.
Our J-Cards are printed full bleed on a digital press, cut on a paper knife for clean edges, creased and then folded by hand.
O-Cards are cardboard covers used in place of the plastic cassette case. These were often used for Cassingles. A proper O-Card is made with 15 point board to support shrinkwrapping. We also do O-Cards on a digital press with 15 pt board, and on brown 18pt chipboard.
Maltese Cross Cassette covers with custom printing can be a great alternative to O-Cards or plastic cases. Our covers are printed full bleed and then die cut for a professional appearance. This item is printed on only one side on sturdy 15 point (300 gsm) board. Four panels unfurl to reveal the audio cassette, and close the same way with a slit to keep the package in place.
U-Cards are shaped like a U and cover the entire back panel of the cassette case. By default these are printed without holes for the cassette case posts, thus they must be paired with cassettes cases with NO POSTS. Holes can be punched for an additional fee.
Album trapsheets are used for our Vinyl Album packages. 4/0 is single sided print with 4/4 is double sided print (double sided should be paired with CLEAR Vinyl Albums.)

Printing Options

Pad print:

We can use a machine called a pad-printer to print on audio cassettes. The pad printer can print the face surface as shown below.

Pad printing ink is more opaque than other print-on-cassette methods and is capable of printing fine details. The default pad print setting is only 1 colour, but 2 colours can be done by special request.
Paper labels:

We can also laser-print paper labels in black or in full color. We have a wide variety of special paper stocks available, including florescents and metallic foils.
Laser engraving:

We can also etch or engrave your design into the cassette and the norelco case!
UV Print:

We're proud to introduce UV Full Body Print services for audio cassette! This service allows for electrifying colour print on your tape, covering the entire face area from edge-to-edge. You will receive way more coverage than pad print, and no longer be limited to only two colours.

Because our stock changes every day, certain shells may require extra charges and add to your order turntime. You will be contacted before we begin production if this is the case.

Spot Gloss is available upon request! Please mention it in the 'Notes' on page 2 of your order and we'll send you an updated quote.
UV Print - Double White

Double White is exactly as it sounds: two white layers between the cassette shell and your provided artwork. This allows for extra vibrancy and pop in your colors, especially useful when using a dark-toned cassette. You can even use just the double white on a shell color to give it a pure white look, instead of being just a little off the mark of #FFFFFF.
UV Print - Spot Gloss

Spot Gloss allows you to highlight certain areas of your cassette art with a glossy varnish. This can be used to highlight text, a logo, or a figure in your artwork. The example above subtly utilizes spot gloss for the Side A text and logo on the top corners. Check out our IG post for a high resolution video.
UV Print - Mirror (AKA Sandwich Print)

Mirror print allows you to print front-and-back images on one side of a clear or tinted cassette. It works like so: we print the mirrored image, then over the mirrored image we print a layer of white, and then over the white layer we print the regular image. Now when you look at the face of Side B, the mirrored image will be seen through the cassette shell, giving it a sense of depth. You can even have a knockout image printed on Side B, to make the artwork even more complex and three-dimensional, like the photo above.

Regarding tariffs

No tariffs on cassette duplication or CD replication/duplication orders

When tariffs were announced in March, we made the decision that we will not be charging extra for tariffs when it comes to cassette duplication or CD pressing orders. Currently, goods compliant with the USMCA will not be hit with tariffs, to which duplication packages qualify. In the event that changes and tariffs are charged due to parts shipped from our Toronto plant, we will be eating the tariff cost. You can remain confident that when you place a cassette or CD duplication order, your price is locked in and there will be no additional duty fees added after the fact.

Our payment structure is as follows: if you purchase in USD currency and with an American shipping address, the order will be processed by our American company (Analog Media Technologies, LLC.) International and CAD currency orders will be processed by our Canadian side (Analogue Media Technologies, Inc.)

Turn Time

Monday to Friday are counted as production days. Rush service does not include shipping time. Shipping is from Toronto or Ohio, depending on the product or service.

Day "0" starts when workable material is submitted and payment is made. Artwork must be ready to print. If there are any problems with your artwork we may not be able to start any production until you correct it. The cutoff time to enter rush orders is noon. If your material and payment is entered after noon, day "0" will be the next day.

The biggest problem we have when trying to keep on track with rush orders is artwork submitted without bleeds and not respecting the safety margin. Here's a youtube video about bleeds and safety margin. If your artwork doesn't follow these basic rules, your job will be delayed and correction fees may apply.

While a rush order means we prioritize and work our hardest to get your album out the door, it should be noted that these are not guaranteed dates. Life can be chaotic, which includes bad weather affecting transportation, machines breaking down, and just general bad fortune. Very unlikely delays aside, we can assure you that prompt manufacturing of your order is important to us, and we'll do everything we can to make it happen!

CD Covers

Difference between Digital and Offset print

Digital press works a lot like your home digital printer, wherein rollers apply coloured toner to a sheet of paper, and heat fuses the image with the sheet. But unlike your home printer (unless you're living in an industrial printing facility) our digital press prints at a higher resolution with with richer CMYK colours than your typical consumer models. Its inexpensive start-up costs allow for affordable short-runs prints while still maintaining a high quality output.

High volume and high quality, the offset press is the golden standard for the printing industry. Far more complex than digital printing, an offset press requires metal plates with an etched design to apply ink to paper. Offset printing is typically used for larger runs (over 500 pieces), though through a custom quote you can request offset printing for shorter editions. You may want to consider this due to it's ultra high quality resolution and richer colours. If you're looking for professional printing quality with a glossy sheen, then our offset services are right for you.

Download Cards

We can host your digital files on our server and generate the download codes for distribution. Our cards are printed in-house on thick cardstock in full CMYK, we can use our default template or you can design your own artwork for us to print! We'll take care of adding the codes. Our servers host up to 250MB of space, more than enough for MP3s. However if you want to host lossless audio or even video files (great for packaging with VHS releases!), we can add more space for an extra cost.

There are three different ways you can submit download codes:

1) You supply a .zip file with a maximum file size of 250MB. We will provide the download cards and web hosting. You can supply your own download card graphics for an additional $10 CAD ($20 CAD for double-sided print.) File sizes larger than 250MB will be subject to an additional fee.

2) You supply us with the download cards, either digitally or via mail.

3) You supply us with Bandcamp or Ampwall codes and we'll do the printing. You need to add 10% of overs for the codes (ex. if you order 100 cassettes, send us 110 download codes), as to adjust for the duplication overs which may occur during production.

Obi-Strips

For decades the North American market has been missing out on a great element of Japanese record packaging: the obi-strip. These strips were used for CD and vinyl releases to give the customer extra information not found on the back of the case. Not only were they informative, but they added to the design of the packaging, often incorporating or extending the imagery found in the album artwork.

We've taken the obi-strip tradition and applied it to our cassette packaging! We can print thick 15pt cardstock obi-strips vertically or horizontally in full CMYK so you can incorporate it with your artwork as you wish. These are a great way to get your CD, cassette, or vinyl to stand out from the pack.

All rates are in CANADIAN Dollars unless otherwise specified.

All shipments are covered for up to $100 against loss or damage except where noted. You can request to purchase additional coverage for $4 per $100 value. $500 value = $16 additional cost.

Shipments are considered delivered based on the courier delivery proof which may include delivery on your porch with no signature. For signature on delivery there is an additional fee of $6.00. Instead of paying for signature, you can use the UPS My Choice® service to redirect your package to a safe UPS location with no additional cost from us.

Canada: taxes are applied based on the shipping address or pickup location.

USA: There are NO TAXES or other fees when shipping to the USA. Most orders ship from Toronto with a standard transit time of 2 days to NYC and 5-6 business days to California.

Australia: According to Australian Customs there is no GST or duty on shipments valued under AU$1000 including the shipping cost.

All other countries: You will be billed your local VAT taxes, duty and fees. You can contact your customs office and UPS in your country to enquire if there are additional fees.

Countries not listed will be similar or more expensive than the UPS Expedited rates posted above. Contact us for a quote.

Many people ask us for rates by the post. We don't recommend it because Canada Post international parcel rates are similar to UPS Expedited, but parcels are delivered in 6 to 16 weeks instead of 1 week (and of course customers start asking us where it is after 3 weeks). We've heard that some postal services are quite lax about collecting customs fees so there may be some advantage to postal delivery. Our quoted post office rates will generally be around 20% higher than the UPS Expedited rates.

It is recommended to put Made in Canada on your artwork. It is mandatory for shipments to the United States.

J-Card Printing

We use Cougar Smooth cardstock for J-cards with up to 3 extra panels (80lb cover.)

Our J-Cards are printed with full bleeds on all sides and include scoring and folding. Your artwork must include bleeds.

We use the terms J plus X panels. A JP0 is a J-card. JP1 is a J-card plus one additional panel. A JP5 is a J-card with five additional panels. Click here for a visual glossary.

J-Cards

Offset Printing

Yes we can do high quality offset printing of J-Cards on our offset press. The sheet size is up to 20x26 inches. Contact us for a quote when you must have offset print. Since a J-Card is so small you should think of printing posters, flyers or postcards at the same time. You have to tell us what paper stock you want so we can quote the job. We include glossy AQ coating as standard, or you can request matte AQ as an inexpensive upgrade.

Embossing/Debossing/Foil stamping available. These are fairly expensiveprocedures with additional costs of $500 or more.

Ultra-Important Information

You must include bleed and respect safety margins. If you don't bleed your art past the cut lines, you will have white edges on 2 of the 4 sides. If you put important text or image details right on the cut or score lines, it may get cut off or be unreadable. If you use 2 point type, it won't be legible. Dark blue or red text in a black background is not very legible at small sizes.

Corrections to art files are available from $30.

Cassette orders should include text that reads 'Made in Canada' or 'Manufactured in Canada' on the J-card artwork in order to safely cross the border. The country of origin should be declared on the artwork otherwise you run the risk of the package being held at the border or returned to the manufacturer. This is the law in the United States, Canada, and many other countries. Moreoever, any big box retailer will refuse to stock a product that doesn't have a country of origin clearly marked on the package. More information can be read in our blog post. Vector images of a 'Made in Canada' logo can be downloaded here.

Also available with additional fee:

100 lb linen cover - Custom order only! Please email us or add a request page in the notes section on the second page of the order form for an updated quote.

We own our own fully equipped print shop with digital and offset presses so we can meet just about any requirement.

Pad Print Colors & Info

Standard pad print colors are black and white, though we encourage our customers to go wild with our many color options!

We try to keep all the Marabu inks in stock. We can also mix most Pantone® colors.

inks for pad printing on audio cassettes

Pad printing can reproduce very fine details as well as large areas. We can make the color more opaque by doing a double-hit or triple-hit. When printing on some cassettes the ink color will change depending on the color of the cassette. To fully preserve the ink color, a white base is required (that's an extra cost). Every cassette is placed on the machine by hand so it takes more labor than the high-speed offset machines. Offset printing on cassette (which we don't offer) uses inks that are not as opaque and the polymer plates are quite low resolution and incapable of reproducing fine details.

Important info:

Your art color must be in black, regardless of your desired ink color! If you want us to print in purple, you need to send us black artwork. If you want us to print in white, you STILL need to send us black artwork.

Pad print artwork must be send in vector format. We highly recommend using Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw when designing. If you are unable to convert to vector format, a small fee will apply for us to convert to vector or print as bitmap.

Click here to download pad print templates.

UV Print

This technology uses a large format inkjet printer capable of printing the entire CMYK color spectrum. The print tends to be a bit contrasty and grainy and can have some minor banding (which is one of the drawbacks of inkjet printing), but overall it looks amazing and most folks are very happy with this option for full color and full-face printing. It's possible to do a kind of 3D effect where the background is printed reversed on the B-side of a transparent cassette, and the foreground is printed on the A side. For simple text or logos, we recommend using pad print for the sharpest results.

Audio Mastering

Master Files

Please supply 1 WAV or AIFF file per side (ex. Side A.wav, Side B.wav) Files must be stereo.

Supply all tracks at the same sampling rate. You have to tell us if you want to adjust the spaces between the songs. In most cases the files are butted together with no extra space added between songs. In other words, whatever silence you want between songs is already built into the tracks. Very often when MP3 files are supplied, whatever program that was used to create the MP3s adds a fraction of a second of silence at the head and tail of every song. If you have a seamless mix then obviously this will sound pretty amateur with a dropout between the songs, and we all waste a lot of time trying to get it fixed.

Proofing Audio

If we have to compile the tracks, you can request an MP3 proof for approval. This proof cost is $35. We will send you an MP3 of each side for approval. We can proceed AS-IS without a proof. NB: If you supply 1 file per side then there's usually no need for a proof, but check the file sizes you've uploaded.

Test Tapes

Test tapes will take approximately 1 week to produce and only include the audio. We will then mail the test tape to you via 2-day shipping. Turntime starts after you approve the test tape. Shipping is included in the price of the test tape though the quote may be adjusted for overseas clients.

Test Tapes with Graphics

To produce a printed product sample we have to do all the print setups including films, plates, press setup, scoring and die-cutting. The cost depends on the product configuration - pad printing and full-bleed O-Cards cost quite a lot to run twice. J-Cards on standard paper and paper labels are not too expensive. Ask your rep for a quote if you feel you need a printed sample before full production. It might take 2 to 4 weeks to complete a product sample.

Additional Mastering

In-house editing services are available. One common task is to correct the loudness of the individual songs on compliations. Adjusting spaces, de-essing, high-frequency limiting, filtering, compression, resampling, etc. Ask your sales rep for a quote or request one in the 'Notes' section of your order.

Barcodes

Barcodes can be generated and added to your order for an additional $25.

Country of Origin

A country of origin marking on the exterior of your album packaging is required for shipments to the United States and other countries. While customs inspections for small packages was once rare, it is now much more likely with recent changes in duty fees. We highly recommend adding a country of origin to your album packaging. As it currently stands, the majority of our manufacturing is done in Canada, those you will need to add 'Made in Canada', 'Manufactured in Canada', or a similar country of origin indication. This can be done by adding it to your print design, or with stickers we supply.

We are not responsible for packages that cannot cross the border due to lack of country of origin markings.

If you choose stickers along with shrinkwrap or overwrap, we will place the stickers underneath the shrinkwrap.

Chrome Tape and Chrome Notch Cassettes

With high-bias chrome tape you'll be able to achieve even cleaner and crispier sounds than our warm ferro tape. You can combine chrome tape with any shell, but for the best results we suggest using chrome tape and real-time duplication when selecting chrome-notch shells.

We do not recommend combining chrome notch shells with ferro tape. Auto-sensing decks will detect the chrome notches and your audio will sound dull, cutting off the high-frequencies.

CD Types

Silver Disc

This is the classic CD type you're certainly familiar with. It is a clear plastic disc with a silver reflective layer on the top side.

Gold Disc

Gold CD with pit art engraving

This premium alternative has a gold reflective layer on the underside, giving a far more luxurious appearance for a premium product.

Vinyl CDs

Add some retro appeal to your CD package! Vinyl CDs look like an old 45rpm record, with a rigid surface on a portion of the top of the disc resembling vinyl grooves, and a circular area for print. You can combine Vinyl CDs with a silver or gold underside.

CMYK+ Pink Wide Gamut Printing

By adding pink ink the color gamut is expanded to allow us to print a huge color spectrum that is normally out of the range of regular printers! We can print a wide spectrum of oranges, purples, reds, and blues that cannot be printed by regular printers. It's no longer necessary to convert your files from RGB to CMYK - send us the original RGB files! Fluorescent Pink effects: This superhot UV-reactive Specialty Dry Ink lets you pack more punch into print. Use it on its own or pair it up with another embellishment. When blended with CMYK, Fluorescent Pink extends the press's gamut, unlocking more vibrant images and more accurate brand colors. Blending it with a metallic color creates infinite palettes of shimmery hues.

Metallic Gold and Silver

Real metallic effects: The sparkle of High Definition Gold and Silver metallic colors can be used on their own or blended with CMYK and/or Fluorescent Pink to deliver new, stunning iridescent palettes that create more "wow" -- fast!

White

Print white on black or colored papers. White and Clear effects: Create new opportunities for unique design expression. Unlock a broader range of specialty media with White underlays, and enhance virtually any stock with White or Clear design effects. You can also work with your print provider to build up multiple layers on a page to add dimension or enhance opacity

High Gloss for Spot Gloss Effect

Clear adds shine to CMYK images and stock. When used over lighter-coverage CMYK images or over stock on its own, Clear Dry Ink adds shine. This creates a spot gloss effect. Spot gloss works well on Cougar Super Smooth with lighter images. Darker images will have their own gloss, so the spot effect won't be as pronounced.

Full High Gloss

Add a full glossy coating to your prints

Low Gloss Clear

A lower gloss to improve results on textured papers like linen

CD Paper Types

Gloss Paper

Our standard paper type for CD covers. Gloss paper has a smooth coated finish, allowing for shiny and high-quality photographs and color. Resistant to fingerprints and smudges.

Cougar Super Smooth Uncoated Paper

Uncoated but extra smooth, Cougar Smooth is a premium paper type for those who want a high quality and vibrant print on bright white paper.

Uncoated Paper

A rougher and more tactile paper type that gives a rustic and organic feel to your print. The uncoated paper absorbs more ink, meaning that certain colors won't pop as much as smooth paper, adding to its naturalistic appeal.

Black Paper

Paper that is dyed black during the manufacturing process. Print on black paper will require a custom quote.

Inside Print for CD Sleeves, Wallets, and Digipaks

Inside print refers to the interior spine area of a cardboard CD package. By default this area is left unprinted and uncoated, which results in a white vertical stripe.

No Inside Print

The default selection with no added charge.

Black Inside Print

This area will be printed black. Note that the black appears a bit lighter due to the reverse board.

CMYK Inside Print

Full CMYK inside print. Note that the color will be slightly duller due to the reverse board texture.

Audio Specs and Information

For CD replication or duplication packages we assume you will supply a final mastered DDP image from your mastering engineer. Some studios still supply a master on audio CD-R which we can convert to DDP image.

If you want to supply audio files you need mastering. Your studio could do it or you can take advantage of our in-house mastering services. If we do a straight transfer of your audio files to CD your files must be 16 bit, 44.1 kHz WAV or AIFF format and you must choose the option for how much space you want between the songs. We can do sample-rate conversion in our mastering studio.

If you are supplying audio files please pay special attention to the specified space between the songs. If your tracks have been mastered as an album then it is likely that you want the default option "0 pause seamless mix" because your mastering engineer has already set the spaces between the songs. Otherwise you may want 2 or 3 seconds between songs. Finding the right pause is what a mastering engineer will help you with.

Artwork Specs and Print Information

We offer 2 types of CD cover printing: classic offset printing, as well as dgital printing. Both are good quality. The typical CD you would find in a store is offset-printed. It has a nice glossy coating to protect against scuffing and fingerprints. We can also apply a subtle matte coating. Offset printing is most economic for runs of 500 and higher. Digital printing is done on large Xerox or Canon laser printers with wax-based toner (ink) and has lower setup fees but higher running costs, so it's best for runs under 500 pieces. In the case of very small text in a very dark black background the digital printing can have a better result. Still, offset printing is the standard for "official" CD pressings. Digital prints can be damaged by heat when shrinkwrapping, so you could opt for poly bags instead of shrinkwrapping.

Cardboard wallets and jackets include sturdy 15 point cardboard with an option for thicker board or recycled 18 point chipboard.

There is no extra fee if we reject your art files once before the PDF proofs are generated. Resubmitting art files several times or after PDF proofs have been generated will result in a fee of $25 per document. Make sure to include bleed and respect 1/8" safety margin in your artwork. Please proofread your files before sending them to us! Make sure to include Made in Canada on the back cover of your artwork.

Aqueous (AQ) gloss coating on the board and paper products adds a nice sheen and protection from fingerprints and scuffing (available with offset printing). We can also do reverse board print, matte AQ, spot UV, soft touch, and other finishes. Embossing and foil printing are also available.

All paper is FSC-Certified and made with sustainable practices.

Electronic PDF proofs are included. Layout and design service is available and will be quoted once we see your art elements, photos, and text. We can estimate the simplest layout job will start from $62.50.

The final prints will tend to be darker on paper compared when displayed on a backlit screen. It's best to print the proofs to get a good idea how the final print will appear.
