Frequently Asked Questions

General

What's your cancellation policy?

Orders for products not yet manufactured by us may be terminated by either party upon 30 days written notice. The customer will be responsible for all costs incurred related to pre-manufacturing or manufacturing of any product, prior to receipt of notice of termination. This includes but not limited to processing fees, PayPal fees, manufacturing, and administrative labour. After such termination, any completed product may be delivered to the customer only after all sums owing to Duplication.com have been paid in full.

What's the procedure if my album contains music or audio samples from other sources?

If an order contains copyrighted music or audio samples, you will need to sign this Letter of Idemnity, as well as provide proof of licensing or ownership. If you cannot provide these documents after payment, the order will be cancelled and a refund will be granted minus the following: processing fees, PayPal fees, and the accumulated cost of any work already performed.

Can I receive a discount if I'm reordering the same album?

Yes! Discounts are available if an order is reusing the same artwork or audio. Please include your previous order # in your quote, and we'll return your quote request with a discounted price.

Mastering, Production, and Printing

What kind of audio files should I send?

Please send lossless files! All files for a project should be uniform in sample rate and resolution. Cassette masters for high-speed duplication should be sent as as 16-bit or 24-bit 44.1kHz lossless files, one file per side. Cassette masters for real-time duplication can be 16-bit or 24-bit, at 44.1kHz or 48kHz sample rate, one file per side.

Vinyl masters have no limitation to their specs. We recommend sending the files provided by whoever did your vinyl mastering. Vinyl masters must be accompanied with an exact and detailed cue sheet.

What's the difference between offset and digital print?

Offset and digital press refers to which printer will be used for your package or artwork. The two main differences are in quality and cost.

Digital print: If you're ordering less than 300 copies of a CD wallet, J-cards, or record jackets, it will likely be printed using our digital press. Digital press works a lot like your home digital printer, wherein rollers apply coloured toner to a sheet of paper, and heat fuses the image with the sheet. But unlike your home printer (unless you're living in an industrial printing facility) our digital press prints at a higher resolution with with richer CMYK colours than your typical consumer models. Its inexpensive start-up costs allow for affordable short-runs prints while still maintaining a high quality output.

Offset print: High volume and high quality, the offset press is the golden standard for the printing industry. Far more complex than digital printing, an offset press requires metal plates with an etched design to apply ink to paper. Offset printing is typically used for larger runs (over 500 pieces), though through a custom quote you can request offset printing for shorter editions. Advantages include sharper and cleaner images, as well as the use of pantone colours allowing for greater colour accuracy. For cassette J-cards, offset print can be paired with both our new uncoated Cougar™ Super Smooth stock and our standard coated stock. You may want to consider this due to it's ultra high quality resolution and richer colours. Graphic designers and printers should accept no substitute!

What is a DDP?

A DDP is an image folder for a CD or DVD, typically created by the mastering engineer using software such as Wavelab, and then sent to the replicator for mass production. A DDP for an audio CD may include metadata such as CD-Text or ISRC codes, and will have finalized track start-time placements. We require a DDP for CD and DVD replication, which can either be supplied by the client or created by our engineer.

Useful programs for the creation and/or playback of DDPs:

  • Wavelab
  •  Gear Pro Mastering Edition
  •  HOFA DDP maker
  •  HOFA DDP Player
  •  Steinberg DDP player

What's the difference between CD-Text and Gracenote?

Both CD-Text and Gracenote are forms of metadata that will read and display the artist, album title, track titles, and more. CD-text is embedded into the physical CD itself, but Gracenote pulls information from an online database. Some players will look for CD-text, others may look instead for Gracenote. Car CD players tend to read from the CD-Text, while software such as Apple Music often read from Gracenote. Some cars like BMWs use Gracenote, in which case you have to ask your dealer for the updates.

Read more about it on our blog.

What is the running time limit for a CD?

We can press CDs up to 80-minutes in length. Some older CD player models may have difficulty playing discs that are over 78-minutes, so a consent form may be required.

Can I receive a test copy with print for approval?

This varies per product. Many of our print orders come with an e-Proof for your approval before printing. Our cassette duplication quote page has an option to receive a "test tape" for you to approve the sound quality of your album. To receive a fully-packaged test run for approval would require additional custom fees. Please include your request in the quote form and we will send you back an updated cost.

I have a cassette I would like to use as a master. Do you dub cassettes from a cassette master?

We can dub from a cassette master, though we strongly prefer to dub from digital files. There are many considerations when dubbing from an analog master, such as empty space, playback and recording speeds of the deck, and so on. Dubbing from analog masters could be done at an additional fee, but discouraged.

Will I be receiving the exact quantity I ordered?

Final quantity may vary up to +/- 10%, extra copies known as "overs." It is standard practice for the customer to be billed for any extra copies that are shipped. In the event of a shortage we will refund the difference. We recommend keeping this in mind when placing your order quantity. Cassette duplication orders will have free overs if the order is paid in full in advance.

Can we add a matte finish to the J-cards?

Our J-cards are already considered matte as they are printed on uncoated Cougar Smooth cover stock. If the art uses a lot of white space the luxurious matte feeling is there. If it's covered in the digital toner ink, it appears and feels glossy. We can add an additional matte lamination starting from around $150. Additional turntime is required.

What formats are supported for optical disc duplication?

DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW DVD+R Double Layer, DVD-R Dual Layer CD-ROM (Mode1 & Mode2) CD-ROM/XA (Mode2 form1 & form2) CD-DA, Mixed-Mode Video CD, CD-I, Karaoke CD(VCD) Photo CD (Single & Multi-session) CD-Extra, HFS, CD-Bridge ISO9660, CD-R, CD-RW Business Card CD-R, 3" Mini CD-R

My order was received damaged, or was stolen, or just never arrived!

We do everything we can to manufacture and ready your order as quickly and as safely as possible. We rely on UPS for the majority of our shipments, and like any other company they are liable to delays due to weather, unforeseen events, and even sheer volume.
We strongly recommend you choose the UPS Signature option when ordering, which will require a signature at the door instead of the driver dropping off your package unattended.
If your package arrives damaged or doesn't arrival at all, please inform your sales representative immediately. We will contact the shipping provider to rectify the issue. You may be asked to contact the shipping provider as well.

I didn't pick up my package in time, and now it's sent back to Duplication.ca. Can I receive a refund?

As we are charged by the shipping provider for the cost of returned packages, orders that have been returned to sender due to lack of pick-up or unpaid fees are not subject to refunds. We can re-ship the product with an additional shipping fee.
