Ampex AG-440C 4-track 1/2" recorder in good working condition: $XXXX

This machine is in our Montreal office and was used for making cassette loop-bin masters. Complete on rolling cart with all original Ampex parts and service manual. Has standard diameter capstan for operation up to 30 ips. It is the last generation of Ampex 440 with a servo-controlled capstan motor. Currently configured for slow speed 3.75 and 7.5 ips, it has easy internal electronic switching to high speed 15 and 30 inches per second. Has switchable guide posts for handling quarter-inch tape. A real gem of a machine with fairly light usage, not abused!

We paid USD$5000 in 1995. We won't accept any lowball offers on this machine.

 

 

It works well with two minor problems:
- One of the front panel switches needs to be replaced or repaired
- Tape lifter linkage needs to be fixed: At the time that mass cassette production was ending, the linkage to the tape lifter broke. Rather than paying for repairs we just rigged up a rope under the transport to operate the tape lifters (that's the bars that lift the tape away from the heads during fast forward and rewind, this doesn't affect recording or playback)
(These are minor problems a technician can fix in a few hours)

Heads are slightly worn so they should be relapped.
